The Soul Train Awards have celebrated Black Excellence since it first aired on television in 1987.

From 1995 to 2005, another award show named Lady of Soul Awards was held, commending only female artists.

The original trophy for the award featured an African ceremonial mask. Redesigned in 2009, it emulates the mascot program of the actual train, the Soul Train.

Soul Train is a notorious music dance television show that aired from 1971 to 2006. Created by Don Cornelius, who died in 2012, this year marks the 50th anniversary.

Subsequent award shows based on the Syndicate Program are held annually except in 2008.
