Follow all the action as Newcastle host Arsenal in the premier league this evening.

Mikel Arteta’s side know that only victory will guarantee that the race for the top four remains in their hands before the last day of the season. The Gunners currently trail Tottenham by two points but have one game less against Antonio Conte’s side. It will take a tremendous show of courage to recover from a Heartbreaking 3-0 loss to Spurs during the North London Derby last week. Rob Holding’s suspension added to Arteta’s woes, with Gabriel Magalhaes’ fitness doubts leaving the Gunners desperately short on defence.

Newcastle don’t have much to play for but pride, with their impressive return to form under Eddie Howe securing the Magpies for a long time. They will be keen to put on a show in their final home game of the season, especially after suffering back-to-back defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City. Prior to that, Newcastle had won their last four league matches in succession and there is no doubt that this will be a huge test for Arsenal at such a crucial stage of their season.

Recent results for Newcastle and Arsenal

Newcastle’s run of four league wins came to an end when they hosted Liverpool at St. James’ Park on April 30. The Reds beat them 1-0 that day and Eddie Howe’s men followed that defeat with a 5-0 loss to Manchester City at the Etihad last time out. It has been two killer games for the club and they will be hoping to finish the season strong starting with a win against Arsenal tonight.

After losing 1-0 to Southampton on April 16, the Gunners rode a four-game winning streak to put themselves in the driver’s seat of the Champions League race. Those hopes took a hit last time out as they were hammered 3-0 by Tottenham’s top four away rivals, but tonight’s victory will ensure Mikel Arteta’s men head into the final game of the season, needing only to match Spurs’ result to secure a place in Europe’s top flight next year.

Premier League standings

Newcastle are 14th in the Premier League table with 43 points from 36 games. A win over the Gunners tonight would lift the Magpies to 12th where they will be just two points away from a place in the top half of the table. If they finish in the top 10, it would be a remarkable achievement for manager Eddie Howe who took over when the club were one of the favorites to be relegated this season.

Arsenal enter the game fifth in the table, two points behind Tottenham in fourth and four points behind third-placed Chelsea. The Gunners have a game in hand against Spurs – which is tonight’s game – and will return to the Champions League places ahead of the final game of the season.

Eddie Howe rejects claims that Newcastle have passed their way to safety

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe hit back at claims that Newcastle bought their exit from premier league relegation problem.

The Magpies, funded by the 80% Saudi-backed consortium of Amanda Staveley, have invested more than £90million in Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Dan Burn and Bruno Guimaraes, as well as signing the loan Matt Targett, in January.

A run of 10 wins from 14 league games immediately after these new arrivals set the club apart from the bottom three, leaving supporters boosted by the departure of Mike Ashley dreaming of what might happen while critics suggested salvation was inevitable given their purchasing power.

However, on the eve of Monday night’s clash with Arsenal, Howe said: “The easiest thing is to talk about money. That’s not what brought us here.

Arteta on the loss of the North London derby

Arsenal’s hopes of securing a place in the top four took a hit on Thursday night as they foundered in a 3-0 loss to Tottenham in the North London derby.

Mikel Arteta gave his reaction to the performance which saw the Gunners go down to 10 men in the 33rd minute after Rob Holding was shown the red card.

“We started the game extremely well,” he said. “Whether we conceded the first goal and the way we conceded after that decision and obviously after the game, we found ourselves in a difficult situation to judge or assess, but I said it, I was really proud players, the way they tried to handle the situation, but obviously very disappointed with the result.

“Thursday was another [low moment]. Obviously losing a derby is always painful and after going through the situation we went through in the game that’s how it is, but also you probably learn a lot more than with any win so that’s good to go through these times sometimes.

Howe credits Arteta’s performance at Arsenal

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe – recently nominated for the Premier League Manager of the Year award – was asked about his counterpart tonight and what he thinks of the work Mikel Arteta has done as a man in charge of Arsenal.

“I think sometimes trying to judge a manager’s performance is very, very difficult because the results don’t always tell the whole story,” he said.

“The biggest compliment I can give Mikel is that he’s seen a great transition of players and a great transition of style of play, and he’s been able to do that while delivering consistent results, which is very, very difficult to do.

“They now have, I think, one of the youngest teams in the Premier League, and the future looks very bright there, so all the credit goes to him and his team and his players, for what he has done.”
