New figures show an increase in online sexual abuse as ‘predators’ target young people | Great Britain |: news

From March 2021 to the end of February 2022, 17022 cases were transferred from the National Crime Agency to the police, against 14,260 in the previous 12 months. Cases often involve guardians forcing children to send their own explicit images – “videos that can be spread to pedophiles”.

The figures were released by the government in response to a parliamentary question from Shadow Culture Secretary Lucy Powell, who asked for information to help discuss the online security bill.

He said. “The government is failing to provide online security for children. The perpetrators are released and the victims are released.

“The bill is long overdue, but it has open loopholes, which means predators can continue to catch children on online platforms.”
