Neighbours: Mark Little returns as Joe Mangel after 17 years for the finale

Iconic Neighbors character Joe Mangel returns after 17 years as actor Mark Little reprises his iconic role ahead of series finale

Australian actor Mark Little returns to Neighbors after 17 years to reprise his role as Joe Mangel in Friday’s episode.

The 62-year-old veteran actor now lives on a remote farm in Wales and was unable to fly to her Melbourne to film his cameo on set with the cast.

His character instead joins Harold Bishop (Ian Smith) for a video call to discuss their concerns about Melanie Pearson (Lucinda Cowen).

Mark originally appeared in Neighbors as Joe from 1988 to 1991 and reprized the role for four months in 2005.

The portrayal of Joe as an ordinary worker who loves a drink resonated with viewers in the UK and Australia.

Fans were disappointed in 1991 when Mark decided not to renew his contract so he could pursue other opportunities.

He joins a number of Neighbors veterans returning to the series ahead of the final, which airs on July 28, including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Guy Pease.

Neighbors was put on hold after Britain’s Channel 5 decided in March not to renew its contract with production company Fremantle to finance and broadcast the series.

The TV Week Logie Awards drew widespread criticism in June for failing to properly acknowledge the series’ cancellation during the ceremony.

Ryan Moloney, 42, one of Neighbours’ longest-serving cast members, later criticized Logies organizers for failing to give the Aussie soap a proper send-off.

Moloney, who played Jarrod ‘Frogfish’ Rebecca, said he was “incredibly disappointed” by the poor tributes gathered for the ceremony.

The Ramsay Street veteran said it was unfair that two former Neighbors stars, Natalie Bassingthwaite and Daniel McPherson, were invited on stage to share their memories of the soap, instead of an actor currently starring in the series.
