The Foreign Minister has accused Myanmar’s “bullying junta” after Myanmar’s London ambassador was locked out of the embassy.
Kyaw Zwar Minn reportedly spent the night in his car after being locked out of the Mayfair building in London. Wednesday night..
In a statement read on his behalf on Thursday morning, a spokesman said the embassy was confiscated by military attachés and the ambassador was “locked out.”
A spokeswoman added, “A coup d’etat occurred in Myanmar and a similar situation occurred in central London.”
He said embassy officials were under threat of “severe punishment” if they were not working for the military regime that seized power in Myanmar on February 1.
Britain was reported to have officially terminated the appointment of an ambassador by the Myanmar administration, PA news agency reported.
However, it is said that no official notice of his replacement has been received.
“We pay tribute to Kyo Zwar Min, who blamed the Myanmar junta’s bullying in London yesterday and gave him courage,” said Foreign Minister Dominic Raab.
“Britain continues to seek the end of coups and horrific violence, and the swift recovery of democracy.”
Since the coup, Myanmar’s security forces have reportedly killed hundreds of protesters and bystanders in violent crackdowns.
A spokesman for Kyaw Zwar Minn said the ambassador has taken an “abnormal step” to “issue a joint statement with the UK Foreign Ministry to blame the coup.”
Mr Zwarmin was recalled to Myanmar in March and has since stopped following instructions from the country’s Foreign Ministry, a spokesman added.
The ambassador is calling for the release of detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the expulsion of President Win Myint.
He also hopes that democracy will revive in Myanmar and that the outcome of the 2020 elections will be respected.
