The electric battle between Ford and Tesla is intensifying over the best luxury battery-powered vehicles. This week I grabbed the steering wheel of Ford’s glittering new green and average flagship all-wheel drive Mustang Mach-E GT. This is the pinnacle of its all-electric Mach-E series.

It’s a brave decision to call what is essentially an electric SUV crossover Mustang, the company’s legendary V8 petrol muscle car.

The first Mach-E was impressed, but the new GT takes it to another level. I drove a new, more powerful and slightly uncomfortable Mach-E GT through the gorgeous and pristine Istria region of Croatia.

It certainly shifts. In addition to Whisper mode (for relaxed driving), Active (default comfort setting) and Untamed (for full-on sporty driving), there is Untamed Plus for even faster on-track.

Ford has taken full advantage of its cleverly stylish and minimalist Tesla, adding Ford’s raw passion to reduce its purity and adding a convenient, user-friendly touch. These include a second small screen in front of the steering wheel.

Mach-EGT has great acceleration. With dual electric motors and all-wheel drive, you can rest up to 62mph in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 125mph. Its 487hp makes it Ford’s fastest-accelerating European five-seater. It’s not as fast as the super-luxury Ford GT supercar, but it boasts 15% more torque than its lower siblings.

It is also set and tuned to provide more traction to the rear wheels than other all-wheel drive variations. Ford says the front motors operate independently, providing additional power and traction to the front wheels for seamless acceleration and enhanced cornering capabilities.

I could certainly feel pushed back into a comfortable sports seat like an astronaut at lift-off. But it’s a controlled force that never gets out of hand or feels wrong on the terrifying side.

As you would expect from a sporty crossover with a gasoline or diesel engine under the hood, it feels slippery and tense and muscular on winding mountain roads.

However, there was a strange cranking when the adaptive safety brake was applied, especially on tight downhill hairpin turns approaching at a reasonably wise speed. Obviously, all the drivers involved in the launch experienced the same thing. Maybe the setting is a bit too careful, or it may be a glitch on an early production car.

For ease of use in different drive modes, the “active” setting is ideal for general driving and is suitable for combining general cruising with a bit of performance. Rolling it up into an “untouched state” raises it a notch and allows you to enjoy a little more driver involvement, but on long journeys it can wear out a bit over time. So, in my eyes, the best plan is to switch between the two.

Apart from that, it’s long on the highway and well-mannered and well-mannered in town.

It takes 45 minutes to charge to 80%, all of which come back from £ 65,080. With plenty of storage, the rear 402 liters have been expanded to 1,470 liters with the rear seats down, and 100 liters have been added to the front trunk. The app will convert your smartphone into a key.

Ford aims to create a new electric Mustang family, including perhaps a more coupe-like two-seater version, and even a seven-seater.

The entry-level Mach-E starts at £ 41,330 with 294hp rear-wheel drive, which accelerates from rest to 62mph in 6.1 seconds, and is all-wheel drive from £ 49,650 to 351hp covering the same ground in 5.1 seconds.

The earliest GT orders will arrive by the New Year and orders will be placed by this spring.
