MP invites Elon Musk to London to discuss Twitter takeovers

Elon Musk has been invited to meet with British MPs to discuss the $ 44bn (£ 34.5bn) he recently received on Twitter.

Conservative MP Julian Knight wrote to Musk about some of the promises the billionaire entrepreneur made about the future of the social media company.

While no concrete decisions have been made on how Musk will change the policies and features of the social media platform, a number of ideas have caught the attention of UK MPs.

Musk has been interested in implementing more stringent user authentication to tackle bots and spam accounts. He also said he is a proponent of free speech, creating speculation that Musk would allow banned users such as President Donald Trump to return to Twitter.

Knight, who chairs the House of Commons (DCMS) Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee in the UK, invited Musk to speak before the DCMS committee to discuss these proposals.

Knight wrote that DCMS is “interested in developments” and noted that the committee also called on the government to strengthen online user verification.

The letter also stated that it is not currently passed Online Safety Billwhich would give UK regulators the power to penalize online platforms that allow ‘harmful content’, and how it might conflict with Musk’s intent on full free expression.

Elon Musk: MP cites a similar position on verification

“Our recent report on the UK Online Safety Bill discussed ways to balance civil liberties such as freedom of speech with the need to tackle the destructive and pervasive online child sexual exploitation and abuse,” he said. Knight wrote.

“Free speech is the cornerstone of functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital home’s square where it discusses matters that are critical to the future of humanity,” Musk said via Twitter after the acquisition has been confirmed.

“I also want to make Twitter better than ever by improving the product with new features, making the open source algorithms to increase trust, overcoming spam bots, and authenticating everyone.”

Musk’s acquisition of Twitter has been approved by the company’s board. However, it will not be finalized until it has received approval from both shareholders and regulators.

Musk has not yet responded to the invitation. Previously, the DCMS has repeatedly called on Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to answer the committee’s questions, only to have the tech billionaire reject the government ‘s invitations.
