Actor Morgan Freeman and former US Senator John McCain, who has died, are on a list of 963 Americans banned from “permanently” entering Russia.
The bans announced by Moscow are the latest response to sanctions imposed on the country for invading Ukraine.
Morgan FreemanThe 84-year-old is on the list, apparently as a result of his appearance in a 2017 video accusing the Russian government of interfering in American democracy.
Freeman told a promotional video for an organization called The Committee to Investigation Russia, CNN reports.
The video was directed by director Rob Rainer, best known for films including “The Princess Bride” and “When Harry Met Sally,” and he was also added to the Kremlin’s list.
Mr McCain is one of three former senators on the list of those who have died.
Russia’s foreign ministry said the people on the list were “fueling Russophobia”.
It states: “We emphasize that the hostile actions taken by Washington, which are a boomerang against the United States itself, will continue to receive appropriate resistance.
“Russia’s counter-sanctions are forced and are aimed at forcing the ruling American regime … to change its behavior, recognizing the new geopolitical realities,” it added.
Back in March, President Joe Biden received a ban on entering Russia in response to sanctions imposed on the country following the invasion of Ukraine.
The White House mocks Russian sanctions joking that no one was planning a vacation in Moscow, and hinting that Vladimir Putin’s regime had targeted the wrong Joe Biden.
Also put 13-name Kremlin “stop list” were Anthony Blinken, Secretary of State, CIA Chief William Burns, Lloyd Austin, Secretary of Defense, and Jake Sullivan, National Security Adviser, along with Hillary Clinton.
The longer list, released Saturday, also includes Mark Zuckerberg of Meta and George Soros.
Along with politicians on the other side of the US spectrum, from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Marjorie Taylor Green, the list includes several dead politicians.
