This year’s MOBO Awards is the first to “celebrate the artistry” of drill wrap.
The ceremony introduces a new category that introduces the best black music in the UK, Africa, the Caribbean and more.
MOBO Founder and CEO Kanya King told Sky News: .. “
Drills have been accused by authorities of promoting youth violence. Big Narstie’s counterargumentIn 2018, he said it was “unfair” that the genre was associated with puncture wounds and shootings in the capital.
That same year, the Metropolitan Police Department ordered YouTube to remove at least 30 drill videos from the platform, claiming to have instigated gang violence.
However, music critic Joseph “JP” Patterson, editor-in-chief of Complex UK, believes it has been unfairly targeted by the media.
“There is something that underlies 100% racism,” he says.
“It seems that any form of young new black expression is always targeted, these guys are just talking about them.”
It was the same year that Drill won the first UK number one on the Tion Wayne and Russ Millions singles, which was also nominated for the song of the year.
“When it got dirty, it was the same thing, it was a moral panic, and I tried to stop it,” Patterson said.
“But I got Stormzy with grime. People are taking it to the next level. I think everyone will accept it a little more with a little time.”
Rapper Dave won the most MOBO nominations We’re All Alone in This Together for his acclaimed second album.
The rapper has been nominated for the best male and best hip-hop performances of the year, as well as the best albums, songs and videos of the year, but there are some interesting inside stories among other candidates.
Singing this year’s song, A1 x J1 was still in school when he created a viral sensation on TikTok during a pandemic.
When Bree Runway was 12, she played for Michelle Obama at Hackney’s school. Currently she has been selected as the finalist for the best female acting and video of the year.
Enny, a rapper from Peng Black Girls who wants to be the best song and the best rookie, told Sky News that he was honored to be nominated “as a rapper and as a female.”
“I think it’s very important to be recognized as a black female rapper as well as a black British artist,” she said. “It’s a bit cool to be in this position because it’s not a very diverse space.”
Twenty-five years after the first MOBO was held, “progress has been seen,” while King says discrimination in the music industry has not been eliminated.
“You know, I look around me, I see producers, I see young people coming in, that’s good,” says King. “But at the advanced level, there is still a long way to go.”
MOBO Awards 2021 will be streamed on YouTube from 8 pm on Sunday, with Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne Pinnock and comedian Munha Chawawa hosting this year’s show.
