Mexico’s Methane Leakage Rate “Caution and Concerns” Against Climate Change, Report Warns | Climate News

Mexico is leaking more methane into the atmosphere than the United States, and the report warns at a rate of “warning and worry.”

A group of researchers have found that the country’s leak rate from its oil and gas business is twice that of the United States, the world’s number one oil producer.

Leakage rates are calculated by dividing the total methane emissions of oil and gas by the total production of natural gas.

Methane reduction to support climate goals

Methane is usually produced as a by-product of the oil and gas industry, but once captured, it can be used as fuel for power plants and households.

Being invisible and odorless, it is believed to be a major cause of global warming and is far more harmful than carbon dioxide.

In a report coming out this week, Mexico It has been shown to release 4.7% of domestically produced gas into the atmosphere. This is a very high leak rate by world standards.

Results are compared to all 2.3% rates. America In the Permian basin, it is 3.7%, which is the largest oil producing region in the United States.

Daniel Zavala, one of the researchers behind the report, described the findings as “alert and worry”, indicating that there is a “big gap” in leak rates.

He, along with 12 other climate change scientists, has 20 months of data collected between 2018 and 2019 by a single sensor onboard the European Space Agency’s satellite, the convection sphere monitor. I studied.

“Reducing these emissions in half would bring the same climatic benefits of 20 years as removing one-third of all passenger cars in the country,” he added.

The study estimates that 1.3 million tonnes of methane are wasted annually in Mexico. That’s about one-third of the country’s natural gas imports, or $ 200 million (£ 144 million).

High emissions at facilities that collect, compress, and store gas have been found to be due to bad national records.
