Two years ago, a Yorkshire-born pop star released her memoir Brutally Honest. This led her to work with Women’s Aid after elaborating on her marriage to Stephen Belafonte.

Mel claimed to have split from Stephen, 46, in 2017 and abused her emotionally and physically during her 10-year marriage. This is what he has always violently denied.

Mel had a daughter, Madison, 10, and Stephen began divorcing in 2018, but eventually reached a settlement that included the withdrawal of the abuse charges.

According to Women’s Aid statistics, nearly half of women report depression or suicidal ideation as a result of domestic violence they have experienced.

Over the past few months, Mel has been keen to get the government to talk to survivors of domestic violence and provide professional mental health support.

Based on what she has endured, the singer said that survivors “need and deserve support services for mental health” to help recover from abuse.

In an interview in September Sun, Mel describes his experience as follows: In fear, I woke up trembling from another nightmare. I couldn’t breathe until I knew I was safe and the girl was safe. This has happened for years since I left my abusive partner – but this is the reality of surviving an abusive relationship.

After deciding to leave the marriage, Mel said she was suffering from anxiety and mental health.

“I literally wanted to physically scrape myself off my abusive ex-partner, but it’s hard to scrape my memory and start repairing emotional damage,” she said.
