Meet the UK’s most energetic tech entrepreneur

Andy Kent doesn’t fit the stereotype of a typical CEO.

Described as “Britain’s most energetic tech entrepreneur,” he is the self-styled “ringmaster” of his circus-themed office, which he says reflects their unique culture.

In his spare time he likes to give HIS autographs to celebrities to see their reactions and is a big supporter of young people and aspiring entrepreneurs.

Speaking to by TechBlast Going 4 Growth’s latest roundtable jokingly describes Angel Solutions as a “22-year overnight success story”.

“You hear about it in the media about becoming an overnight success, but it took 22 years to get here,” he says. “It is a hard job.

“I’ve always said ‘we’ll be as big as we need to be’. I never decided to have 10,000 employees.

“We launched in 1999 and have 50 employees. We wanted to climb. We had plans to increase our turnover from £ 3 million to £ 4 million to £ 5 million, but then came this thing called COVID.

“Our growth strategies are based on well thought out plans. We had very specific growth plans: ‘go big or go home’. We tweaked it slightly last year to “get ahead” as we responded to the huge change COVID has brought to our growth strategy. “

“I wish I had started my business sooner”

Angel Solutions operates exclusively in the education sector, an industry that has experienced huge disruptions due to COVID.

Even a naturally energetic person like Kent doesn’t try to underestimate the impact of the pandemic.

“We work with 20,000 schools and local authorities, but for the past two years there has been no exam data and no Ofsted inspections,” he explains.

“It was really difficult to get in touch with teachers when schools were missing 16 staff members due to COVID and everyone was getting used to distance learning.”

The result was that Angel Solutions had to adapt their business plan.

As the education system begins to return to some kind of normalcy, Kent says Angel Solutions is in a good position to lead the case.

“We have great products and great people,” he says. “We have continued to invest in our people, many of whom have been with us for a long time. Now let’s get back to the front line. “
