Warner Bros. Pictures has confirmed that James Bond star Mads Mikkelsen will take over the role of Johnny Depp’s Dark Wizard Grindelwald in the third Fantastic Beasts movie.
Depp resigned from his role after losing his famous defamation proceeding against The Sun over an article calling him a “wife beater.”
Danish actor Mikkelsen, 55, became famous at the 2006 Bond Movie Casino Royale as the dubious banker Luciffle on the other side of Daniel Craig. He also played Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the television series Hannibal.
In the world of Harry Potter, Grindelwald is a very powerful and evil wizard, second only to Lord Voldemort.
Depp, 57, said Warner Bros. had asked him to resign from the franchise after a legal defeat. He was denied permission to appeal the decision, but was allowed to apply directly to the Court of Appeals until December 7.
Fantastic Beasts 3 is produced in the UK, with Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander and Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore. The movie will be released on July 15, 2022.
