On January 3, 2025, the final night of the PDC World Championship at Alexandra Palace features an exciting match between teenage sensation Luke Littler and three-time champion Michael van Gerwen. This match is being called “prodigy versus master.” While Van Gerwen has a wealth of experience and is considered one of the greatest players, Littler, at just 17, has already made a name for himself with impressive wins. A photo that speaks a thousand words
That’s a wonderful photo. This is being touted as prodigy versus master.
I don’t know if I like that analogy. Indeed, Van Gerwen has had the best career of any player still active. He’s the best player overall, probably the second-best player of all time. But what if Littler was a genius? Certainly, regardless of age. However, he is now a serial winner in his own right.
Regardless, it promises to be a great match. I’d love to see these two play a legitimate chess match.
Bray: “I think MvG will win”
Russ Bray told Mail Sport:
Littler still has work to do. He is still a boy, a child, and in a few weeks he will become a proper adult. We’ll see how good Luke is in the next few years because everything is new and he’s not guarding the money inside the circuit. So let’s see what happens after that, because I’m sure there’s going to be different pressure on him.
He feels a different pressure at this year’s World Championships because everyone expects it. So it’s a different ball game. But he’s more than capable of winning a world championship, and there’s absolutely no choice when it comes to that.
Van Gerwen was closest to Littler when he was 17 years old. I called nine darts for him against Bernie. [Raymond van Barneveld] When he was 17 years old, in front of a crowd of 4,5,000 people in the Netherlands. can’t believe it. There are still young people in India who are only 14 years old. He is the national champion of India. He’s a little neat. He’s kinda tasty.
I think MvG will win 7-4. He is hitting with form and confidence at the right time and has also won three times in the past, so he knows how to win this tournament and that will be the key for him to win the title. It might be. But Littler is a class act, and to be fair, 7-4 could have gone either way.
Russ Bray’s views
My colleague Sam Lowry had the pleasure of speaking with legendary referee Russ Bray ahead of tonight. What a guy.
Bray retired after last year’s world championships after many years of service to the game. Even if you’re not familiar with darts, you’ll be familiar with his iconic 180.
This is a social clip I filmed before the tournament started when he got into a fight with him at Winner Stay On.
He has also published a book. It’s called “All About Darts” and it’s worth buying if you haven’t checked it out yet.
Prizes offered
This is what they’re playing for tonight.
He’s probably about the same height as Littler.
So far, this tournament has all been a bit of an underdog when it comes to Littler. Especially during his wins over Nathan Aspinall and Bunting, he was joking, laughing, and bumping his opponents left, right, and center.
I noticed there was a little bit of criticism of it on social media last night, but I can promise you there won’t be any of that tonight. It’s not MvG style.
The mind games had already started last night with Van Gerwen’s post-match presser before Littler won the match.
He was dismissive of Littler’s past run, while also taking a dig at a reporter. Of course, I’m the most popular. ”

Is MvG back to its best?
Van Gerwen’s numbers weren’t quite up to Littler’s, but he too was dominant, sending out Chris Dobbie with the same score.
He averaged 98.84 points, hit the 180 mark eight times and was like the old Van Gerwen, overcoming what was a really bad year for him. But like I said, it doesn’t matter if he won tonight.
“I’ve completely won,” he told Sky Sports last night. That’s true. There’s one very big hurdle left to overcome tonight.
Ritter advances to the finals
It was suggested that Littler would get the job done against Stephen Bunting last night, but not in as dominant a form.
The teenager averaged 105.48 points, threw 13 hits in the 180s, and had the best double success rate of 44.19 percent.
It’s not that Bunting was bad. Although he also averaged over 100 points, he was not as good as Littler and only contributed to his opponent’s sensational performance in a 6-1 loss.
Littler is ready. It is his destiny to become a world champion.
Littler’s sensational 12 months
It was a great year for Littler. Let’s be honest, how many people knew who he was before last year’s World Championships?
He was only 16 years old when he made his debut in last year’s tournament. And he just kept winning. He was a bit of a cocky guy, so to speak, but he beat the likes of Andrew Gilding and Matt Campbell on stage, and later went up against his childhood hero Roman van Barneveld.
No problem there either. They just won 4-1 against the four-time world champion.
He defeated both Brendan Dolan and Rob Cross, and his run continued until he faced his arch-rival Luke Humphries in the final.
He took the lead, but missed a double 2 to take a 5-2 lead. But he didn’t and Humphries came back for the win and showed his class. But a star was born.
Since then, he has become really famous and appeared on shows such as The Jonathan Ross Show, Bullseye, and Game of Slows.
However, there are darts that can be thrown. And I have work to do tonight.
Here’s how we compare the two men ahead of tonight: the man and the boy.
It’s no secret that Van Gerwen is far more experienced. His total number of major titles is 47, which is comparable to Littler’s three titles. But in this tournament, Littler scores more 180s and has a higher average – he’s a bit of the biggest machine.
We also looked at who they support, their route to the finals, and their partners. click here To see the full tape, see below.
Clash of two giants
Van Gerwen is aiming for his fourth world title. This is Littler’s first time, and he’s only 17 years old. For those who don’t know, I would like to say this.
The Dutchman has a winning car, but hasn’t had his best results this year. He has won almost nothing, but that could all change tonight and he wouldn’t mind one bit if it was him lifting the trophy in a few hours.
That is precisely the Sid Waddell trophy they will be playing for tonight, named after the legendary commentator. But it’s also their right to be named the best player in the world, even if neither of them can leapfrog Luke Humphries with a win tonight.
And then there’s the small matter of £500,000.
It’s Luke Littler’s time to shine
Good evening everyone and welcome. It’s a big match – the World Darts Championship final, Luke Littler vs. Michael van Gerwen.
I can’t wait. As soon as defending champion Luke Humphries was sent off, it was the final everyone wanted, the final everyone was going to get.
A teenage prodigy became a world powerhouse against one of the greatest athletes in the history of the sport of darts. There is no time for sentimentality. A poetic ending. If Littler wants to win this, he needs to earn it. But he knows that, and he knows what he’s up against.
The game is scheduled to start around 7:40. Strap up and get ready for what could become an absolute classic.
