Not many women can boast of dating Elvis Presley just to make another guy jealous, but that’s exactly what West Side Story star Rita Moreno did.
Born in Puerto Rico, the 89-year-old actress has 80 years of business experience and is hailed as a legend in the entertainment world. So it’s no wonder she has a lot of stories to tell.
She used the King of Rock’n’Roll to get the attention of the flirtatious Marlon Brando, but it didn’t last because Elvis was too bored.
Speak only to the sun as Stephen Spailberg’s remake On the screen of a 1961 classic hit movie, 89-year-old Rita recalls:
“I went with you Marlon Brando At that time, I went out with him to make Marlon jealous … he was a sweet country boy.
Marlon, meanwhile, said, “I was the weirdest guy I’ve ever met. It was very intelligent, very well read, and very enthusiastic. It’s only extreme.”
But her eight-year on-and-off relationship with an American actor made her suicide..
She became obsessed with the brand from the moment she met on the Desiree set in 1954, but he tricked her many times, married twice, and made her children fathers in love with his wife. ..
A turning point came when Rita told Brand that she was pregnant with her child. He calmly arranged for her to have an illegal abortion.
In the end, the “pain” of “making him trample me” made the actress very low and she overdose.
She survived, but needed years of treatment to get over the brand.
Conversely, Rita’s suicide attempt began shortly after being filmed in a Westside story-the time of her career she should have been riding high.
As the original energetic Anita, Rita made history by becoming the first Latina actress to win an Oscar-one of the ten bestowed on the blockbuster movie.
Now she is ready to re-enter the record book, thanks to her new role in the remake.
If she wins an Oscar this time, Rita will be the oldest nominee in history and the only person to be nominated for a role in two versions of the same movie.
“I’m very excited about it, I’m trembling,” she tells us.
I was told “black up”
Playing Anita changed her life forever. Until then, she was from the Caribbean, but Hollywood directors repeatedly cast her as Native American or Asian.
Sparky Puerto Rican Anita has made a terrific change from the “boring dim maiden”, but even the movie set that tackles the tragedy of white and Hispanic gangsters killing each other is expected to “blacken” the stars. I was shocked at what I was doing. -What she describes as “obscene”.
She states: “They wanted us all to have the same bloody dark shades.
“I remember telling the make-up artist,” Oh, I don’t like this make-up. My skin is thin and it’s so dark that I get streaks. “
“I said,’I don’t know why I have to wear it. I’m a Puerto Rican,’ and he actually said to me,’What are you a racist?'”
I said’I don’t know why I have to wear [dark make-up].. I’m a Puerto Rican, “he actually told me,” What are you a racist? “
Two white reeds, Natalie Wood, who played Maria, and George Chakiris, who played her brother Bernardo, both needed to be blackened to portray Hispanic characters.
The producer insisted on creating a strong contrast between Puerto Rican sharks and members of the White Jets gang.
He argued that the situation was very different in Speilberg’s remake, and that all actors and actresses fit into the ethnic background of their role.
He auditioned 30,000 about Maria’s role, in the process finding a newcomer Rachel Zegler whose mother was Colombian and taking him to Puerto Rico twice so that the locals could speak up. ..
Rita’s Hollywood career began at the age of 16 when she signed to MGM Studios, which she thought looked like “Spanish Elizabeth Taylor,” of four women who won Oscar, Tony, Emmy, and Grammy. I became one of them.
But she remembers being “treated as a sex object” since she was a teenager.
Despite her young age, her boss sent her to a cocktail party. There, a studio boss told her, “I want you f ***,” and the host said, “You’re a sexy little b ****.” She while dancing.
It was sour to come to Rita.
When she was 19, John F. Kennedy, then a prominent member of the House of Representatives in his mid-30s, was flirting with her at a nightclub.
She states: “That was always the case. The only difference was that I didn’t get to his bedroom in the hotel.”
To make matters worse, the agent she relied on to find her job forced her to herself in his apartment.
The trauma of the rape was flooded when Rita had to perform a Westside story scene where a jet gang attacked Anita.
They are wounds that never healed completely and I still claim that some of them are still present in me
After a male actor approached her, she escaped from the set in 1961 with a flood of tears.
“They are wounds that never heal completely, and I still claim that some of them still exist in me.”
Veteran stars believe that women are still being exploited, and last year’s conviction of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein for rape and assault has shown little change.
Singing in the rain, Rita, who also starred in Wanggwa Na and Wanggwa Na, found love away from Hollywood in 1965 after being founded on a blind date. Wedding doctor Leonard Gordon.
They stayed together until his death in 2010 and have one daughter, Fernanda and two grandchildren.
As he celebrates his 90th birthday this month, Rita shows no signs of slowing down.
She has appeared on Netflix Sitcom’s One Day at A Time since 2017, has appeared in many films over the last decade, and produced a documentary about her life, Rita Moreno: The Girl Who Decided to Go For It.
That meant she was confident when Spielberg first talked to her about appearing in a West Side Story remake.
Rita told the director that she didn’t want to play a “cameo,” but changed her mind when she realized that her role was much greater.
She plays the newly created part of Valentina, the widow of Character Doc, who prevented Anita from being raped in the original.
Returning to that moment was difficult for the actress, especially to see Ariana Devose, a new Anita from Hamilton’s original Broadway cast, play it.
She states: There I’m in the exact same scene, but I’m really a replacement for Doc.
“I’m looking at another Anita’s face, you don’t know how strange it felt. It was a kind of out-of-body experience.”
Rita Moreno: Just a girl who decided to go, it’s downloadable. West Side Story is now in the cinema.
