Lewis Hamilton sent championship leader Max Verstappen to the hospital and rebelled against the first lap of winning the Birmingham Grand Prix. Daniel Ricciardo, on the other hand, had the best results of the year.
Hamilton also overcame a 10-second penalty on Sunday and rekindled the title defense with a record eighth Silverstone victory.
The seven-time World Champion won his home track, snapped a five-race run without a win and reduced the gap with Verstappen from 33 points to eight points at the top of the drivers’ championship.
“Did you think we’re going back to the title fight? I was hoping for it, but I thought it would be a long slogan to try to get the points back,” Hamilton said.
This season’s title battle was one of the hottest days of the year, boiling in front of 140,000 fans at packed Silverstone, and a horrific event at 290km / h turned the race into a red flag and Hamilton. Was given a penalty.
23-year-old Verstappen remained smoking.
“It’s okay. I was very disappointed to be taken out like this,” Verstappen posted on Twitter.
“The penalties given do not help us and do not justify the dangerous movement that Lewis got into orbit.
“It’s rude and contrary to sportsmanship to see a celebration while in the hospital, but we move on.”
Verstappen left Coventry Hospital late Sunday.
“I was discharged from the hospital after all the checks were successful. Thank you to everyone for their wonderful message and best wishes,” tweeted Ace from the Netherlands.
Hamilton fell from 2nd to 5th due to a penalty, but was able to hunt down Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in just two laps in the same corner intertwined with Verstappen.
Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas is third and McLaren’s Lando Norris is fourth, one more than Australian teammate Ricardo.
Verstappen crashed from the race after colliding with Hamilton, and the Dutch spun hard on the barrier with a shock recorded at 51G.
Upon getting out of the car, Verstappen was first seen at Silverstone Medical Center and then taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
“In the case of Max, he’s very aggressive, and today I was completely by his side and didn’t have enough space,” Hamilton said after the race.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner was critical of Hamilton’s driving.
“He’s a (Hamilton) World Champion. He shouldn’t do that. It’s unacceptable … for me, it’s an empty victory,” he said.
