Although North Korea’s cultural life is strictly regulated by the country, young people across the country secretly enjoy k-pop across national borders using flash drives.

The New York Times reports that Kim is currently cracking down on a culture he believes is corrupting his country’s “dress, hairstyle, speech, and behavior.”

In December, communist countries introduced a new law that means that anyone who sees or owns Korean entertainment will be sent to a labor camp for 15 years.

And anyone who smuggles music, shows, or movies into the country can face the death penalty.

The law also requires that “speaking, writing, or singing in Korean style” face two years of hard work.

The punishment came to light after Seoul-based news site Daily NK smuggled internal documents abroad.

The new law came months after Kim accused Kim of external influences that he believed could harm the administration.

He reportedly warned that “serious changes” were underway in the “idealistic and mental state” of North Korean youth.
