Sky News journalist Kay broke the “inadvertently” rule late the same night because “while waiting for a taxi house, I easily stopped by another restaurant to spend a penny.”

Kay was also reported to have invited four colleagues to her home.

Kay talked about his rule violation and said he was unaware of the rule violation at first.

Kay said: “I thought I was Covid compliant. It wasn’t. I made a mistake.

“I was stupid and disappointed myself and the viewer. I’m sorry for what I did and the heartache that caused my loyal friends with me at the time.

“I paid for my mistakes. It’s quite natural. Viewers told me how dissatisfied they were with me and that it was right to do so.

“As time went on, the music in my mood changed and the viewer wanted me back.”

An internal review in December revealed that “a small number of Sky News staff attended a social event in London” that violated Covid-19 rules.

“Saturday night, I was enjoying my 60th birthday at a Covid-compliant restaurant.

“It’s embarrassing to say that I inadvertently broke the rules late in the evening.”

Kay added in a subsequent tweet: “I was waiting for the taxi to come home at 11:00 pm.

“Desperate for the toilet, I stopped by another restaurant to use the penny. I can only apologize.”
