Kathryn Kates, the actress best known for her role in Seinfeld and Orange is the New Black, died at the age of 73, her agent confirmed.

Her representative of Headline, writing on Instagram, said: “Our powerful @officialkathrynkates has died.

“She is always remembered and worshiped in our hearts as the powerful natural force she was in. She loves this ship and has enough patience to fill 10 ships. Was there.

“The real icon. I miss you.”

Kates appeared in the first episode of Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, starring as Piper’s future mother-in-law who was eventually put in jail on suspicion of drug smuggling.

She also appeared as a recurring character in two episodes of Seinfeld (The Dinner Party and Rye).

Her other roles included Angie Decaro of Newark’s Many Saints, Mrs. Carabino of Disney’s Lizzy McGuire, and Mrs. Sapelstein of the crime drama Shade of Blue.

Born in New York City in 1949, she began her acting career in the 1970s and joined the Los Angeles theater company.

By the 1980s, she had played in movies and television, and later in her life she returned to the New York stage.

Kates is survived by her sister, Mallory and her brother, Joshua.
