Jimi Hendrix: Manuscript of rare texts collected more than 50 years after being torn in half for autographs | Ents and art news

More than 50 years after it was torn in half to be given to two British fans, a rare signed manuscript of Jimi Hendrix’s lyrics has been reassembled.

The lyrics for the 51st Anniversary, released as the B-side of Hendrix’s second hit in the top 10 of Hendrix’s Purple Haze in the UK in 1967, were torn when the legendary American guitarist used paper to sign autographs before a concert in Bath.

But after searching, they have already been collected again from the Lancashire-based rock and roll gift shop Tracks Limited, and the manuscript is valued at five figures.

One of the two halves of a rare signed manuscript of lyrics by legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix, collected 55 years later

Tracks spokesman Paul Wayne said: “There are very few Jimi Hendrix manuscripts and even fewer that have been signed by Jimi and the other two members of the Experience.”

Hendrix was in the early stages of his career when his band Jimi Hendrix Experience played at the Bath Pavilion on the evening of February 20, 1967, after replacing Chuck Berry, who was canceled.

Before the concert, the star went out to meet two teenage fans who had gone to the backstage door in search of an autograph.

Hendrix told the 15- and 16-year-olds that there was no blank sheet, so instead he took a page from a notebook, tore it in half, and signed the two pieces, along with bandmates Mitch Mitchell and Noel Reding.

Coming home after the show, the teenagers realized that on the back of their leaflets were handwritten texts entitled 51st Wedding Anniversary and including the side title Key of B.

As their lives went in different directions, the two friends lost touch later in life.

But when one of the fans turned to Tracks Limited for a quote from her autograph kit, she was able to follow her old friend to see if she also kept her part of the page.

Fortunately, there was and the manuscript will soon be offered for sale by Tracks.

Hendrix is widely considered one of the most important musicians of the 20th century and one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

He was principal performer at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, just weeks before his death in London at the age of 27.
