Earlier, Mathison accused Barty and Nean of “glamorizing” and “glorifying” alcohol after world number one drank beer with online commentators to celebrate his victory at the Australian Open on Saturday night.
He told radio hosts Maz Compton and Danny Lakey that people were angry with him because they did not like anyone to criticize the drinking culture in Australia.
“I watched it with my kids, and then the only way it’s culturally or socially accepted to celebrate is with alcohol?” Mathison explained.
“Part of the reaction was surprising because people don’t want their relationship with alcohol to be questioned.
“The tweet was more about that, by posting it [Barty] in a situation in which she had to participate [in drinking] or be a “non-Australian”. ‘

However, the media figure seemed resigned to confronting the rage, admitting: “The outrage machine needs to be fed, and that’s me today.”
Mathison’s original tweet said that “the glamorization of alcohol in this country is normalized to the point where we can’t even celebrate success without alcohol on live television” after Barty and the band Nine drank beer together on air.
His comments infuriated many Australians, with one posting on Facebook: “Crawl back into your hole, James. She is an adult who struggled to win a Grand Slam tournament.
“If it was Gatorade, you would complain about sugar intake.”

However, Mattison defended himself on Twitter, writing: “This is not an attack on Ash, which I adore and is an incredible role model.”
