The crack began to appear in 2002 when the father of a former English captain broke up with his then-wife Sandra after 33 years of marriage.

A year later, David moved to Real Madrid in the summer of 2003. This adds geographic distance to the already tense relationship.

Like his son-like father, Beckham’s men are both large football enthusiasts.

Born and raised in Leytonstone, eastern London, David inherited his love for Manchester United from his father and was trained at the city’s Bobby Charlton School.

Kitchen fitter Ted supported his son’s football efforts and signed to Manchester United’s youth team at the age of 14. Hairdresser Mama Sandra traveled 200 miles each weekend to see him play.

At the 2006 World Cup, David sent his father’s ticket but refused to meet him, but in September 2007 a life-changing event took place.

At the age of 58, Ted had a fatal heart attack.
