Ikea plans to close the Tottenham supermarket, which will jeopardize 450 jobs

The Swedish furniture giant said that the transition to online stores and the reconstruction of the area where the store is located, forced him to “assess the long-term viability of the site.”

The unexpected announcement came weeks after a retailer said it was allocating £ 1 billion to new and upgraded stores in the capital, including outlets in Hammersmith and the West End.

He has not yet confirmed the closing date, and the store will continue to trade normally. Ikea has promised to find alternative jobs for “as many” employees as possible,

The outlet is best known for the “couch riot” sparked by its opening in 2005, when thousands of bargain hunters stood in line for hours to take deals, such as a 45-pound couch. As a result of the collision, six buyers were taken to hospital.

As a result of the closure, Ikea will receive only four full-scale stores of “blue boxes” in the London area – in Croydon, Greenwich, Lakeside and Wembley. It also has a smaller retail outlet in Hammersmith that opened last month, and the first outlet in the West End opened in the fall of 2023 at Oxford Circus on the former flagship website Topshop.

The company said it had decided to close the store after “a broad assessment of IKEA UK’s presence in London in line with the change in shopping behavior”.

It adds: “Last year, online sales accounted for almost half of total retail sales, and demand for a variety of services as well as convenience deliveries accelerated. This, combined with the reconstruction of the area where the store is located, prompted the retailer to assess the viability of the site in the long run.

Peter Jelkeby, head of Ikea in the UK, said: “Caring for our colleagues is our top priority and we will manage this process with respect and compassion. The decision to offer to close Tottenham Hotspur was not an easy one, but we believe it is right for our customers and businesses as we strengthen our position for the future. We will do our best to support the affected employees, and we hope that as many of them as possible will continue their careers with us. ”

Ikea first closed a major store in the UK in the summer of 2020 when it closed its branch in downtown Coventry.
