Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell says computer models are valuable for natural disaster planning.

“As an administration, our highest responsibility is to keep our residents safe, and studies like this are an important tool to analyze data, understand risks and predictions, and best prepare for future emergencies,” he said.

“We will continue to ensure our Office of Emergency Management and all our departments are best equipped to respond to emergencies and natural disasters, while we also strengthen our infrastructure and build a resilient city now and into the future.”

Seattle is located along the Seattle Fault. a series of shallow east-west faults that cross the Puget Sound Plain and run through the city.

The fault is less dynamic than the Cascade subduction zone, which runs 700 miles from Cape Mendocino, California, through Oregon and Washington, ending around Vancouver Island, Canada.

It is also less known and less studied than the San Andreas Fault in California, which is the longest in the world. It lies between the Pacific and North American plates, running more than 800 miles from the Salton Sea to Cape Mendocino. San Diego, Los Angeles, and Big Sur are on the Pacific coast, while San Francisco, Sacramento, and the Sierra Nevada are on the North American coast.

But it is capable of unleashing devastating earthquakes.

The last known earthquake on the Seattle fault occurred about 1,100 years ago.

However, geological evidence indicates that five additional magnitude 6.5 earthquakes have occurred on the Seattle Fault Zone in the past 3,500 years.

Hilary Franz, commissioner of public lands, said people shouldn’t be fooled by the relative anonymity of Seattle’s sin.

“Most often when we think about tsunamis, we think about our outer coast and the communities along the Pacific Ocean,” he said.

‘But there is a long history of earthquakes along the Puget Sound fault.

“Although the history of earthquakes and tsunamis along the Seattle Fault is less frequent than in the Cascade Subduction Zone, the effects can be massive.

“That’s why it’s so important that these communities have the information they need to prepare and respond.”

Maximilian Dixon, director of the hazard and awareness program for the Washington Department of Emergency Management, said local residents should make a plan.

“Although the likelihood of such events occurring in our lifetime is low, it is important for families to prepare now,” he said.

“The earthquake will be your warning that a tsunami may be on the way.
