Hull-based HiiROC was crowned KPMG’s UK Tech Innovator 2022

HiiROC, a Hull-based technology scale that has developed a zero-cost, scalable hydrogen generation solution, has beaten off competition from high-growth businesses across the UK to be crowned KPMG UK’s Tech Innovator 2022 .

More than 250 technology scalers from across the UK applied to take part in the competition, showcasing the best technology innovation across a range of sectors. A shortlist of 80 of the most innovative firms participated in regional rounds during June to find the final 12 future tech titans.

They then went head to head in Leeds last night at Nexus, the University of Leeds innovation hub. HiiROC CEO Tim Davies pitched the win to a panel of judges from the technology industry and investor community.

Working in collaboration with the University of Hull, HiiROC is a small Hull-based business that has developed thermal plasma electrolysis that will accelerate cost-effective and climate-friendly hydrogen production using production units that they have also designed, developed and built.

Thermal plasma electrolysis has lower CapEx and lower operating costs than other technologies and offers a more energy efficient solution than other methods, producing more hydrogen per kW of electricity and with the use of an on-site production unit, transport costs that removal and reduced storage and compression costs. .

2022 UK Tech Innovator Champion

HiiROC was the UK winner after competing against scaling technology businesses from across the country offering the best technology innovation across a range of sectors.

Many competitors represented health technology, high tech, mobility and advanced manufacturing, and the essence of the competition was shown by offering technological solutions and improvements to many societal challenges. HiiROC is now on an impressive list of winners who have gone on to do great things, including companies such as FIDO TechVividQ and What 3 Words.

HiiROC will now advance to the global stage of the competition in Lisbon alongside Web Summit, which will take place in November, to compete with technology innovators from 23 other countries. The winner of that stage of the competition will be crowned Global Tech Innovator 2022.

Warren Middleton, lead partner of KPMG’s UK Emerging Markets Center of Excellence, said:

“The power of our technology sector to deliver impact on a global scale is more important than ever, and our UK innovators are a success story. Despite the global economic challenges, our UK innovators are attracting record levels of VC investment, with over £15.7 billion raised in the first half of this year demonstrating that we have the potential for entrepreneurs, people who to create, attract and sustain breakthroughs and growth across the UK.

“We had some amazing competitors here representing innovation across a range of sectors, each capturing the heart of the competition by offering technological solutions and improvements to many of the challenges facing the world today. HiiROC is a great example of the growing number of innovative businesses in the UK which are proving that there are many opportunities for growth if businesses are willing to think differently or approach a problem from a new angle. I wish them all the best as they move on to represent the UK at the world competition in Lisbon and we are excited to be supporting all our finalists as they work towards becoming -the technology players of tomorrow.”

Adrian Poole, director of Digital Natives at Google Cloud UKI and one of the judges that evening said:

“The judges had a very difficult task when they had to choose one winner from these exceptional businesses which produced some very exciting pitches. HiiROC was chosen because of their clear opportunity to solve a global challenge, strong management team and opportunity for rapid scale. We are delighted that they now have the opportunity to tell their story on a global stage in front of investors, experts and global corporations, as part of the KPMG Private Enterprise Global Technology Innovator competition in Lisbon later this year.”

Tim Davies HiiROC and Warren MIddleton KPMG

Tim Davies, CEO and Co-Founder of HiiROC, said: “We are delighted to have been named a KPMG UK Tech Innovator 2022, especially given exciting competition from some great firms. This award is a testament to our amazing team, the passion they show and the fun we have on the journey.

“We are working to make an impact on global net zero – everyone’s issue, so the prospect of being able to showcase HiiROC in Lisbon to a global audience is an opportunity to build real momentum around new and improved ways to make hydrogen. I am looking forward to meeting the other international innovators who, like us, are driving solutions to an important global issue. I think this is not only a win for us, but a win for the hydrogen sector to really gain momentum on an issue that will have a real impact on climate change.”
