London Fire Brigade has revealed that dozens of residents have been evacuated from a block of flats in Hornchurch, Havering.
The crew, who were called at 12.55pm, estimated that around 60 people had fled the building before firefighters arrived at the scene.
So far, there are no reports of casualties.
London Fire Brigade initially said 10 fire engines and around 70 firefighters were at the scene to tackle the blaze.
However, further updates indicated that 15 fire engines and around 100 crews were dealing with the fire at Mavis Grove.
It said steady progress had been made, but crews were expected to remain at the scene for “around several hours”.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but part of the apartment on the second floor was burned.
The brigade tweeted: “Fire at Mavis Grove in #Hornchurch producing very thick black smoke.
“We know it’s a hot night, but if you live nearby, please close your doors and windows.
“Steady progress is being made on the #Hornchurch fire.
“The staff will be at the scene for a few more hours. There is no information about the victims.”
