[LONDON, Friday 1st July 2022] Holy Health, the first evidence-based digital health coach for sustainable behavior change, announces today a £ 1.4 million grant. The investment funding was reinforced by a £ 540,000 award from UKRI for the Healthy Aging Challengeleading a new collaboration with UK Lewisham and Southwark Age (AUKLS) help improve the physical and mental health of people between the ages of 50 and 70 by slowing the onset of chronic diseases with digital health tools.
The total of £ 1.4 million raised, supported by investors including Kima VenturesDr. Fiona Pathiraja, founder of Crista Galli VenturesPaul Forster, Ed Cooke and Silicon Valley-based Very Serious Ventures – will enable Holly Health to customize their digital health coach to support healthy aging, in co-design with members of the public, as well as supporting the expansion of the existing service, which is currently being implemented through UK primary care practices.
Launched in August 2021 by former leader of Deliveroo, Facebook, Microsoft and Aldi Operations, Grace Gimson, and neuroscientist and software engineer Dr. Claire Wu, Holly Health was created to support permanent lifestyle change among populations, including the minimization and prevention of chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and stress.
A digital solution for healthy aging
Over 80% of adults over the age of 65 have a chronic condition, which impacts quality of life, increases the risk of other diseases, and costs billions of health services. Behavioral changes such as increased regular physical activity have been shown to help people manage or prevent chronic conditions; however, older adults often find it difficult to initiate and maintain lifestyle changes, particularly without access to ongoing personalized motivation and support. The digital health coach will be optimized to support change in the behavior of seniors at home and in the community, improving access to personalized support and long-term health outcomes.
During the 18-month project, 6,000 seniors will see the digital health coach integrated into Age UK Lewisham and Southwark’s network of groups, classes, events and care services. If successful, the project has the potential to adapt to the Age UK national network of over 1 million seniors and be more widely adopted by public and private health professionals.
Working together with the existing health care pathways of the NHS and local authorities, the project aims to:
- It increases physical activity and improves mental health in people between the ages of 50 and 70
- Improve cardiovascular health and musculoskeletal problems
- Reduce and slow the onset of chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes
- Minimize loneliness by increasing confidence and self-motivation
Grace Gimson, CEO and co-founder of Holly Health comments: “We are over the moon to partner with Age UK Lewisham and Southwark. We know our digital health coach helps people make lasting changes to their health and well-being, but this project will provide us with the information to develop a version of the app that best meets the needs of seniors. I know we will be able to show how important digital health tools are in supporting community health. By catalyzing the adoption of these technologies at the population level, we are able to help more people feel better as they get older. “
Ross Diamond, CEO of AUKLS comments: “Age UK Lewisham and Southwark exist to improve the lives of older people by working towards a future where all people are valued, safe and empowered to make choices about their lives.
We strongly believe that working with Holly Health to develop a health behavior change coaching app tailored for use by older people will help us achieve this, especially promoting health and wellbeing, by helping us to provide tools that can enable older people to positively manage their health and well-being. We believe Holly Health can support lasting change in healthy behaviors and encourage better community involvement, and we look forward to the results of the planned trials. ”
Paul Forster, one of the first angel investors at the company said, “Holly Health’s digital health coach for behavior change has tremendous potential to provide large-scale physical and mental health support across all demographics and communities. I’m delighted to support them on their journey and can’t wait to see the impact. “
