Since the pandemic hit last year, we suddenly found we had a lot more time on our hands. As a nation, we spent more time playing games, talking to family, and watching television. The success of streaming services was already on the rise pre-pandemic. However, undoubtedly, the pandemic had an impact on its sudden surge in popularity. Whilst high-street shops suffered, streaming services such as Netflix thrived and gained millions of more viewers in 2020/21, with this expecting to slow down post-pandemic.
However, the amount of people with Netflix subscriptions doesn’t accurately reflect the number of people using the service. For every subscription up to 4 users can have a profile within it. Not to mention the fact that you can watch the same account on multiple screens at once. Thus, there are many more Netflix viewers than the ones counted in the statistics.
Student loans specialists Smart-Pig conducted a recent survey on 2,000 UK viewers, asking if they paid for their Netflix Subscription. Of the 2,000 people surveyed, 49% of respondents said they don’t pay for their Netflix subscription. For the people not paying for their Netflix subscription, this is a great deal. Presumably, many users not paying for a subscription are younger/unemployed. However, Smart-Pig rightly mentions – “2020 has been especially challenging for students, with the “student experience” vastly reduced due to the restrictions placed on social events, so entertainment options such as streaming services have become an important escape for many.”
Why is Netflix so popular?
Firstly, they have started to create more original content. As well as showing films and TV shows from other creators, Netflix has funded hugely popular original content that continues to be enjoyed by millions.
The popularity of its original content could be due to Netflix releasing their seasons all in one go. Users can then binge their favourite seasons without waiting a week for a new episode to be released. As a result, people are more likely to spend more time using the platform and continually renew their subscriptions.
Secondly, they offer cross-platform support. You can watch Netflix on almost any device with internet access. Your history gets saved automatically, so if you are watching something on your phone, you can pick it up in the same place on your TV later. You can even download shows and watch them when you don’t have internet access.
Thirdly, there are no adverts. There is nothing more frustrating than getting interrupted in the middle of an intense crime drama. Well, with Netflix, there is no such problem. You can watch whatever show you like, whenever you wish, creating a seamless viewing experience.
