Ghislaine Maxwell should serve at least 30 years in prison for her role in the sexual abuse of teenage girls, U.S. prosecutors said prior to a hearing.
In new courts, the behavior of the British socialist was described as “shockingly predatory” – and her crimes were described as “monstrous”.
Maxwell was convicted in December of recruiting teenage girls for U.S. financier Jeffrey Epstein for sexual abuse from 1994 to 2004 – and a judge is set to sentence the 60-year-old next Tuesday.
Her lawyers have previously claimed that she shall not serve more than four or five years’ imprisonmentand claim that she has been facing severe and punishable prison terms since her arrest in July 2020.
Those representing Maxwell claim she received death threats while sitting behind bars, with the harsh environment causing her to lose hair and weight.
But giving her recommendations to the judge, prosecutors said complaints of poor detention conditions were no reason for a lighter sentence – adding that she “had enjoyed remarkable privileges as a high-profile prisoner”.
They wrote: “Waiting hand and foot for reception is without a doubt a shocking and unpleasant experience.”
Federal sentencing guidelines state that Maxwell must serve between 30 and 55 years in prison.
Prosecutors wrote: “As part of a disruptive agreement with Jeffrey Epstein, Maxwell has identified, cared for and abused multiple victims while enjoying a life of extraordinary luxury and privileges.
“In her wake-up call, Maxwell left her victims permanently scarred with emotional and psychological injuries. That damage can never be repaired, but it can be counted on to make a fair sense of Maxwell’s crimes.”
The judge was also called upon to take into account her “complete lack of remorse”, adding the document: “Instead of even showing a hint of acceptance of responsibility, the defendant makes a desperate attempt to bring guilt wherever else she goes. kin. “
Maxwell’s lawyers have claimed she was a scapegoat for Epstein’s crimes, but this was dismissed as “absurd and offensive” by prosecutors.
Retorting that she was an adult who made her own choices, she wrote: “She made the choice to sexually exploit numerous underage girls. She made the choice to partner with Epstein for years, working as partners in crime and destructive harm. to make vulnerable victims. “
Epstein murdered himself in 2019, aged 66, in a Manhattan prison cell while awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges.
Maxwell’s trial was widely regarded as the bill Epstein never had – and in often powerful and explicit testimonies, four women said that sociality was a central figure in his years of abuse.
