Germany will face neighbors Austria in the next quarter-final of Euro 2022

Germany take on Austria in the next Euro 2022 quarter-final after England sealed their place in the semi-finals.

The lionesses came from behind to beat Spain on Wednesday night as Georgia Stanway’s sensational extra-time goal secured a 2-1 victory.

Here we take a look at what lies ahead.

England are still without a major honor in women’s football and it looked like another tournament was about to overtake them. Having scored 14 goals and not conceded once in the group, this was by far their toughest test. Spain – who hadn’t shown their best until then – turned on the style and duly took the lead through Esther Gonzalez. England’s hopes only seemed to dim for Ella Toon come off the bench and equalize after a knockdown from his Manchester United team-mate Alessia Russo. It sent the game into extra time where Stanway settled the game with a superb strike that set England up for a semi-final against Sweden or Belgium in Sheffield on Tuesday.

Pain for Spain

One of the pre-tournament favourites, Spain fell again in the quarter-finals. This is the third women’s Euro in a row where they have not been able to exceed the last eight. Spain dominated the majority of the 90 minutes but were unable to find their way back into the game after Toone’s equalizer and will now have to regroup ahead of a crack at next year’s World Cup. Star player Alexia Putellas is expected to be back and firing on all cylinders by then after being ruled out of the Euros with a knee injury.

No additional motivation for Germany

Germany head coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg insists facing Austria in the quarter-finals has no impact on the occasion. Eight-time winners Germany are aiming to improve on their clash in the round of 16 five years ago. She said: “It makes no difference to us. We could face Norway, Sweden, Austria or the Netherlands, which are also all our neighbours. It’s a quarter-final at the Euros, and every opponent is rightfully here…it has no impact on us.

Austria is the lowest ranked nation in the tournament. Head coach Irene Fuhrmann said: “It’s a feeling that we are among the top eight teams in Europe again. We have another chance to face one of the best teams in this tournament. Germany, like England, has proven its consistency. They haven’t conceded a goal yet, it will be an incredible challenge.

I’m glad we were able to show the depth of the team – it’s amazing. Each player can start or enter and make the difference.
