George Orwell, renowned for his works “1984” and “Animal Farm,” will be commemorated with a new £2 coin from the Royal Mint, honoring the 75th anniversary of his death. The coin’s reverse design, created by Henry Gray, features a camera lens resembling an eye, surrounded by the phrase “Big Brother is watching you,” and includes the engraved quote “Some truth, some truth.” Other celebrated literary figures on £2 coins include Shakespeare, Austen, and Tolkien. The coin will be available in various proof versions starting January 15, 2025, and can also be struck by visitors at the Royal Mint Experience.

The reverse or reverse design of the Royal Mint coin, released to commemorate 75 years since the author’s death, depicts a dystopian world centered around Winston Smith’s characters living in a society restricted by totalitarian control and mass surveillance. It pays homage to the novel “1984”.

From January 20, visitors to the Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant, South Wales, will also be able to strike their own George Orwell £2 collectible coin.
