A video shared on social media shows a man, identified as former Labor MP Ivor Caplin, being handcuffed by a police officer.
Sussex Police have confirmed the arrest of a 66-year-old man on suspicion of having sexual contact with a child.
Caplin was suspended in June last year on undisclosed “serious charges”, which he denies.
Footage of the arrest, shared online, shows a man wearing a black trench coat and red cap being pinned down by officers.
It appears that the police then took the arrested man’s wallet and placed it in an evidence bag.
A police spokesperson said: “We are aware of footage circulating on social media showing a man being detained in Brighton on suspicion of having sexual contact with a child.”
“Officers have confirmed that a local 66-year-old man was arrested on Saturday 11 January and remains in custody.”
The man was seen being restrained by the people involved in the stabbing.

The former Hove MP, who represented the constituency from 1997 to 2005, has been charged by Labor with serious charges.
“This is an active, ongoing investigation.”
Mr Caplin is understood to deny all charges against him.

In one video shared online, Mr Kalin is seen being handcuffed.
He was then subdued by two police officers, one of whom began searching for the former lawmaker.
The officer took a mobile phone from the suspended Labor member’s pocket and placed it in an evidence bag, saying he believed the device “contains evidence”.
During this time he did not say much, except when questioned by one of the officers.
