Former DJ will be the first skier to represent Jamaica at the Winter Olympics next month.
Benjamin Alexander just started playing sports in 2016 and doesn’t have a full-time coach. However, he managed to make it to Beijing after finishing seventh in the Giant Slalom of the Cape Verde National Ski Championships on January 12.
He says his unlikely story ended in a crash after being partially inspired by the legendary bobsleigh team of 1988, the first Jamaican in history to participate in the Winter Olympics. ..
They were transformed into cult heroes by the 1993 movie Cool Runnings.
Asked how he felt about participating, Alexander told Sky News:
“The biggest emotion I have right now is relief. I put all my life, my savings, my reputation, absolutely everything into this. 200% of all of me to come here It took. “
Two-year plan to reach Olympic standards
Two years ago, engineering graduates decided to make a plan to “get to the Olympic standards little by little.”
He says he skied for 450 days over the last two years without being able to practice anymore due to the pandemic.
“I worked hard on this project in March 2020,” he said. “So most of my fights and struggles opposed the pandemic-I couldn’t get into the Southern Hemisphere to train during their winter and lost months of competition because they were cancelled. . “
Alexander has never lived in Jamaica, but a pandemic in March 2020 allowed him to spend four months in Jamaica when he was stuck in the Caribbean.
There he was able to “learn more about the island” and understand the “cool elements” associated with it at the convention.
“The biggest cheers at the Olympics are always for the host country, but the second biggest cheers are always for Jamaica,” he said.
Skiers quote cool running as an inspiration
Asked if Cool Runnings influenced him, he said, “Without the movie, if my friends were joking that I was like Cool Runnings, I wouldn’t have made this plan.” I answered.
And hoping to win, “I don’t want to rob people who started at the age of two.
“My story is all about participation, and hopefully it will inspire the next generation of Jamaican children to start earlier than 32 years old.”
The Beijing Winter Olympics will begin on February 4th.
