After heavy rains in Germany, floods destroyed buildings, leaving families trapped on the roof, killing five and missing 50
At least five people have died and another 50 are missing after several homes were washed away by heavy rains in the west Germany..
One of the dead was a firefighter who drowned in an attempt to save people in the town of Altena, 15 miles south of Dortmund. Four more people were killed in Ahrweiler County, 30 miles south of Cologne.
Most of the missing were people in Ahrweiler County who were stuck on the roof of the house before the building was flooded.
Sustained rain also caused the collapse of six homes in the town of Adenau.
Another man went missing in an eastern town of Jöhstadt after trying to protect his property from rising water levels, officials said.
Recently, heavy rains have fallen in Germany and neighboring countries, causing widespread damage.
