TOTO WOLFF talks about MERC engine issues
Keep in mind that Bottas has a new engine this week, causing a penalty.
Merc’s customers Williams and Aston Martin also use the new Russell and Vettel engines, respectively.
And that may mean bad news for Lewis Hamilton. Lewis Hamilton may face more grid penalties with the new engine.
Wolff admits that the team was struggling with credibility this season as the complex power unit was pushed to the limit in the fight against Red Bull.
Hamilton was given the last 10th grid drop in Turkey by adopting a new internal combustion engine and had to calm down to finish the race in 5th place.
Wolff snapped to Sky F1 when he was quized that the team’s engine problems were being caused by an “air valve.”
He blew up: “You have been given a lot of bullishness. You and I don’t understand what it is, so we don’t have to talk about air valves or anything like this.”
He was later forced to clarify the cause of their lack of credibility, “I don’t want to reveal what it is for obvious reasons, but that’s always a concern.
“When I see Monza, where Valtteri had to start from behind, he lost points.
“We’re trying to boost our performance every year. It’s been a point this year, but for the past seven years that idea has won races and championships.
“I wanted to reduce the penalties and engine usage, but this year was a big blow. I have to put it on my chin and do the best I can.”
Wolff says he is considering increasing Hamilton’s engine numbers for fear that Merck will fail in the middle of the race.
He said: “I can’t say if we take or what the percentage is, but there are obviously risks.
“The hard part to assess is whether you want to anticipate the situation, take a penalty, and get a hit.
“Or do you want to do it and take the risk? Could it be DNF? That’s the discussion we’re doing right now.”
