Euro 2022: England coach Sarina Wiegman thinks only of ‘now’ ahead of Sweden semi-final

Sarina Wiegman insisted that the present is all that matters before the Euro 2022 semi-finals, despite their impressive record against Sweden and England’s recent defeats in the last four major international tournaments.

The Lionesses will have a shot at winning a major international tournament for the first time in Sunday’s final if they manage to beat the top-seeded team at this Euros at Bramall Lane on Tuesday night.

Having fallen at this hurdle in each of their last three tournament appearances, England have the chance to reach their first final since Euro 2009, when they finished second against Germany.

Wiegman was responsible for one of those three semi-final defeats while in charge of the Netherlands in 2017 and also beat Peter Gerhardsson’s Sweden at that tournament, as well as at this stage of the 2019 World Cup.

“I think it’s necessary to be in the ‘now’,” the England head coach said in Monday’s pre-match press conference.

“I think you always have to learn from your experience and take away the things that you can take to be better, to get better to learn. But there’s no point now talking about it all the time because it’s now, so why should we talk about it?

“My team is totally different [compared to 2017] because I’m the English manager now and it’s a different situation. I am now in ‘the now’, thinking ‘the now’. Sweden have always performed very well over the years in women’s football.

“We take it at the moment. We are England, Sweden are our opponents tomorrow. They have a very strong team, so do we, and we just hope that we will play our style of play and that will lead us to win.

When asked if England are ready to make history, Wiegman wasted no time in replying: “The England team are ready to play the best game tomorrow against Sweden and I hope we will inspire a nation.”

England’s run to the semi-finals of the World Cup three years ago ended when Steph Houghton missed a late penalty to equalize against the United States, as the Lionesses never won shots on goal.

Wiegman prepared his players for all eventualities, including kicks. “We prepared for everything. We talked about all the scenarios that can happen,” she said. “I think we are totally prepared for everything and then we will see how it develops tomorrow.”
