Eric Gates transitions from UEFA fighting to cattle grazing

Forty years later, Eric Gates will undoubtedly give up the Uefa Cup with a heartbeat.

“If we lost one, it would definitely have been the Uefa Cup.

“But you then win the Uefa Cup, so think of it like this:

“You’re happy, but I wish I could win the other two. I didn’t think about it at the time, but looking back, a lot of games have caught up.

“Was we the best side in the country? The best team was Villa because they won the league.

“But we beat them three times, so think for yourself. We were certainly the most interesting.”

Gates, 65, who lives in his hometown of Durham, enjoys a quiet life without a cell phone or email, but when he talks about Ipswitch, he doesn’t stop.

SunSport tracked him to a farm just outside Durham and spent two hours recalling it.

Ipswich backed it up with a comfortable 3-1 home win at home and then saw off Linus Mikels FC Cologne 1-0 in the first leg of the Portman Road semifinals.

After that, Robson recalled: “The season is worth it after all, and our football will be memorable.”

Over 50,000 fans packed into the city center to salute the conquered heroes.

Gates left for Sunderland in 1985 and was on the farm with his wife Dorothy for over 20 years.

With a cheeky smile, he describes himself as a “general manager.”

He states: “I walk around and feed the animals. There are Highland cows, chickens and Welsh Mountain ponies.

“But I’m a soccer player, not an f ***** g farmer.

“I’m a lucky young man for Daftsod from the northeast, who left for Ipswich at the age of 16.”
