England v Australia LIVE rugby: Latest score and updates from the first test in Perth today

England kick off their summer tour against Australia in Perth today.

Courtney Lawes side captains with Owen Farrell underdog for the first time since 2018, with head coach Eddie Jones impressed with the way the Northampton flanker has supplemented in the fall and at the Six Nations. Farrell has fully recovered from his ankle injuries and starts at 12 between flying half Marcus Smith and out of center Joe Marchant.

Joe Cokanasiga is named on the left wing for his first test in a year as Danny Care completes his superb international comeback by starting at scrum-half with the uncapped Jack van Poortvliet – rather than Harry Randall – on the bench as a cover.

For Australia, Quade Cooper was set to play his first Test since helping the Wallabies to a narrow win over Japan in October but after a warm-up injury, it was Noah Lolesio who wore the number 10 shirt. James O’Connor came on the bench after being initially sent off Matchday 23. Follow all the action with our live blog:

TRY! AUSTRALIA 16-14 England (Jordan Petaia try, 64 mins)

And the Wallabies strike! Initially, it’s the forwards who make telltale bumps in the marginal defence, condensing the England line and making a mistake – a lazy tackler offside at the next ruck.

This brings a penalty advantage and a chance to use hands. England are just about well numbered but struggle to fill the width, and Len Ikitau slots them in before passing, leaving enough room for Jordan Petaia to get past Freddie Steward and over Danny Care in the corner. A score well taken and a reward for the exceptional pursuit of Marika Koroibete on the restart.

Noah Lolesio converts very, very well, and Optus Stadium come back with Australia once again in the lead.

Australia 9-14 England, 62 minutes

Better from Australia – a well directed restart is won superbly in the air by Marika Koroibete, beating Jack Nowell in the air and his more dominant hold earns him a scrimmage call with the unplayable ruck.

SADNESS! Australia 9-14 ENGLAND (Owen Farrell penalty, 61 mins)

Owen Farrell adds three more to England’s tally since the start.

But it’s not a great management game from Australia. They quickly throw the lineout and give a long right clearance to an England receiver, and Freddie Steward responds with a more questionable kick.

Noah Lolesio can’t handle the high lift, and Australia is then penalized on the ruck.

Australia 9-11 England, 58 mins

England are starting to assert themselves on the contest and still win the majority of collisions, but Australia hang on valiantly. Mako Vunipola replaces Ellis Genge as England launch their final midfield attack, one that ends with Maro Itoje failing to catch a laser wide pass from Marcus Smith.

Australia 9-11 England, 56 minutes

A vital intervention by Michael Hooper! England is getting closer and closer to the Australian line and is only about a meter away as a carrier isolates itself a bit. Hooper is remarkably quick at carrion, picking up the pieces at the ruck and earning a crucial hold from the penalty spot.

From inside Australia 22, England play, Jack Nowell attacking space inside his former Exeter colleague Nic White. Ellis Genge carries firmly, and Billy Vunipola has a hint of space on the right.

He is handled by Cadeyrn Neville, but Australia can only stifle the ball in touch. England will again go from five outings.

Double change for Australia – Angus Bell had a solid 50 minutes and receives a warm goodbye from substitute Scott Sio, while the need for an additional specialist in the second tier sees Rob Leota sacrificed to the arrival of Matt Philip.

Marika Koroibete is decisively managed by Lewis Ludlam, who made an impact from the first 15 minutes on the pitch, and earned England a penalty.

Two majestic takes from Freddie Steward, first from the reboot, then Nic White’s skyward box. Andrew Kellaway similarly performs catch duties, but is bumped by Joe Cokanasiga as he lands.

England try to counter-ruck, first legitimately through Lewis Ludlam, but less so as Jonny Hill and Ellis Genge enter through the side door.

TRY! Australia 9-11 ENGLAND (Ellis Genge try, 50 mins)

A long pause… and given test! This time England move, Australian bodies fall as England put in a sustained effort. Ellis Genge and Lewis Ludlam pass with the ball in the coward’s hands, and after prolonged inspection by James Doleman, the referee spots a ball on the ground between the bodies and just awards the score.

The conversion slips.
