Energy company reveals how customers can earn £400 winter rebate.United Kingdom | News
This winter, those who pay their utility bills can receive a £400 rebate
Those who pay their utility bills can receive a rebate next month to match their heating bills this winter. The decision was announced by then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in May and was confirmed last week as part of Liz Truss’ cost of living measures. Reported by Chronicle Live.
More than 29 million households will be eligible for a discount worth £400, paid automatically in six installments from October to March.
You don’t have to apply for money and you don’t have to pay it back.
You can receive it in installments of £66 in October and November and £67 in monthly installments from December to March.
However, most households will receive cash, but how they get it is up to energy suppliers, who are free to decide how to distribute money to their customers.
Some people pay installments to their bank account, while others treat them as credits on their bills or discounts on direct debits.
If you switch suppliers between October 2022 and March 2023, you will still receive a discount from your new supplier.
If you change the payment method on your bill, the discount will be applied to your new payment method.
Most energy companies announce how their customers will receive their money, although the details are still sketchy for some such as Octopus and Utilita.
Here’s what we know so far.

Direct Debits: Direct debits will be billed as normal and rebates will be credited to your bank account over 6 months.
If your monthly direct debit is less than the rebate amount, the debit amount will be refunded to your bank account and the rest will be added as a credit to your energy account.
For example, if your monthly direct debit is £60, £60 will be refunded to your bank account and the remaining £7 of your £67 rebate will be paid to your energy account.
Pay upon receipt of invoice: Discounts are applied to your account balance each month.
Smart Prepaid Meters: Similar to top ups, discounts are applied to your monthly meter.
Traditional Prepaid Meters: Get discounts via vouchers and cash them out when you top up in the usual way.
