A wheelchair-bound grandfather saved his 10-year-old grandson from a 250-pound bear by throwing a metal pipe.

The boy was playing near a trampoline in his grandparents’ backyard in Morris, Connecticut, when he was approached by a black bear around 11 a.m. Sunday, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP).

His grandfather, James Butler, said the bear came from the woods behind his house.

Butler told a Republican-American in Waterbury, “I heard him yell ‘Bear. He looked up and saw that his paw was in the bear’s mouth and that the bear was trying to drag him onto the lawn.”

Butler turned to the bear and threw a metal rod at the bear’s head. The bear let go of the boy, but then attacked him again and tried to roll him over on his back, Butler told the newspaper.

Butler said a neighbor heard the boy screaming at that point and used a pipe to shout and scare the bear away.

Butler and his grandson entered the house, but the bear climbed up the wheelchair ramp and peered inside.

“We thought he was going through the screen,” said Butler. “Definitely he was a big threat.”

State police and DEEP environmental officials arrived at the scene and shot the bear dead.

Butler said the boy had bite marks on one leg and ankle, scratches on his back, and a puncture wound on one thigh.
