Why a day’s abo may keep a heart doctor away? Because they have been shown to increase HDL, or good cholesterol – the type that protects our heart and blood vessels. The heart-friendly quality of avocado is probably in a combination of monounsaturated fats, fibers, and compounds called plant sterols such as beta-sitosterol that help block the absorption of cholesterol from the intestines.

Lower blood pressure

Eating more potassium-rich foods as well as reducing salt helps keep your blood pressure within a healthy range. Bananas are often considered the champion of potassium, but avocados are just as good. One medium-sized banana and half of a medium-sized avocado each provide about 330 mg of potassium, but some varieties contain even more potassium. For example, gem avocado is rich in potassium and large, with half providing 695 mg – 35% of the recommended daily intake.

Nutrition booster

Avocado lovers tend to have a good diet overall. One study found that they ate more fruits, vegetables, unsaturated fats, fiber, potassium, magnesium, vitamins E and K, and less sugar than avoiders. Avocado fat also helps absorb nutrients such as beta-carotene (which the body uses to produce vitamin A), lycopene, and lutein. Adding half avocado to a salad of lettuce, carrots and spinach allows adults to absorb nearly 14 times more beta-carotene and 4 times more lutein.
