Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has been competing for three weeks with a broken rib, will face the Jacksonville Jaguars in London on Sunday with the Miami Dolphins.
Dolphins coach Brian Flores said he was “excited to be back” about Tagovairoa, who practiced Wednesday. “We are on the right track. He has the opportunity to practice and hopefully play the game (Sunday).”
Jacoby Brissert, a Dolphins backup quarterback who played 0-3 when Tagovairoa was playing, practiced only on Wednesday due to a persistent hamstring injury.
Dolphins (1-4) haven’t won the match since Tagovairoa threw 202 yards during the season. Defeated the New England Patriots 17-16.
On Sunday, the dolphins will challenge AFC’s only unwinning team, the 0-5 Jaguar.
Jaguar lost 20 games in a row. This is the second longest skid in NFL history.
Jacksonville, who lost 31-13 to Miami last year, is within the NFL record of consecutive defeats set by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976-1977: 26.
The Jaguars, carrying James Robinson, said of Jacksonville’s winning streak, “I can’t wrap my head around.” “We have to find a way to win.”
This Miami match may represent Jacksonville’s best chance of not breaking Tampa Bay’s record, but Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence argued one thing.
“I won’t talk about streaks,” Lawrence said. “I don’t think it’s good to talk about it. You can’t be desperate. You have to keep working.”
Lawrence, who led the Clemson Tigers past Tagovairoa’s Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2018 National Championship Game, has not had early success in the NFL. Lawrence has completed 59.4% of the passes with 6 touchdowns and 8 pass cuts. He averages 229.2 yards per game.
The numbers for the game on Sunday are close, as the dolphins are listed as a favorite of 3 1/2 points.
The attacking dolphin is guided by three solid targets: wide receiver Devante Parker and rookie Jaylen Waddle and tight end Mike Geshitsuki. However, Parker is suspicious due to shoulder and hamstring injuries.
In 12 career NFL games (11 starts), Tagovairoa completed 63.2% of his passes with 7-4, 6 intercepts and 12 touchdowns.
Miami’s running game was poor as Myles Gaskin led the team with just 167 yards this year.
Defensively, dolphins may be concerned about cornerbacks with Zabien Howard, who is suspected of having shoulder and groin injuries. Howard led the NFL in two intercepts.
While running the ball, Jaguar is much more powerful than Miami. Robinson is rushing 387 yards, four touchdowns and an average of 5.8 per carry. He stopped his career’s best 149 yards effort against the Tennessee Titans last Sunday.
After achieving a total of 16 carries in the first two games of the season, Robinson is now pacing for the 1,316-yard season. Last year, Robinson set an NFL record in most scrimmage yards, with 1,414 undrafted rookies.
Lawrence has also proven dangerous on the ground with a 110-yard rush yard and two touchdowns.
In the overtaking game, Lavis Cashenor Jr. and Marvin Jones are the top two targets in Jacksonville. However, Jones, who had the best 76 receptions of his career at the Detroit Lions last year, didn’t practice on Wednesday for personal reasons.
In Jaguar’s defense, linebacker Myles Jack is suspicious because of a back injury. He leads the team with 36 tackles.
