The best-known actor in his role at Bernard Holy, BBC shows Z car And Doctor Who died at the age of 81.
The star died after a long-term illness, as a friend paid homage to him, his family confirmed this morning.
Holley became a popular name for Z-Cars’ PC Newcombe in the 1960s and early 1970s.
He played a police officer in 277 episodes of the long-time hit TV classic.
The actor also appeared in two separate roles in the first Doctor Who in the episode “Cyberman’s Tomb,” in which he played Peter Hayden.
In 1971, he played the alien villain Axos in a cult science fiction series, fascinated The Claws Of Axos.
And he became a reader of the children’s television series Jackanoly between 1974 and 1991.
Toby Hadoke, a longtime friend and fellow actor, said he was “an actor who is easy on naturalism and whose acting on a small screen looks easier than it really is.”
He added: “It’s not surprising that he made television his home, and the directors went to him many times.
“He was always completely believed and had a lot of communication in just a few things.
“And he was an easy-to-see and likable performer because he had a natural warmth and charm.
“He was a very reliable and welcoming person. I think everyone knew him.”
Holly was born on August 9, 1941.
He is survived by his wife Jean, son Michael, grandchildren Marley and Isla, and five brothers and two sisters who have been married for over 50 years.
