“Barry was 18 years old, not eating and struggling physically to get around. He only had 3 legs, but that had never held him back – until now.’

Deborah said the cat had lost weight rapidly over the past month and was clearly “suffering”.

“Putting Barry to sleep was the last thing we wanted to do, but it was cruel to do anything else,” she wrote.

“Barry has been a part of our children’s lives, all their lives. They’re understandably devastated – even though they know it’s the right thing to do.

Back in April, Deb talked about her upcoming 50th birthday, detailing how she feels about getting older.

The Channel Nine presenter – who turns 50 in November – spoke about marking the milestone in an editorial for 9Honey.

“The thought of being middle-aged was something my 18-year-old self could never fathom, yet here I am looking down at 50,” she began.

Despite facing aging, Deb insisted she’s “not going to rush out to buy a red Porsche.”

“I’m fine with the passage of time. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished with my family and career, and even though my rickety lower back is a reminder that my body is starting to not be able to do what it used to, I’m healthy and happy to be getting older and I hope wiser,” she continued.

Although she would “like to meet her family and friends”, Deb said the thought of throwing a birthday party “feels like a superhuman effort that will age me another 10 years instead of celebrating the last 50”.

She explained that she’s already so busy and “the thought of adding a big party or getaway to the equation feels more exhausting than celebratory.”

“I have to admit that I’m starting to take great pleasure in things that I once only imagined I would enjoy at 50,” she added.

“I bought a pressure washer three weeks ago and there is a hypnotic joy in blasting a concrete walkway to its original mold-free state.

“I washed and vacuumed the car by hand last weekend and it worked out great.”

Deb added that she doesn’t care if it sounds “boring”, she’s happy to live a “simpler life” as she gets older.
