Chris Durkin and Taxiarchis Fountas both scored late in the second half to lift D.C. United to a 2-1 win over Orlando City on Sunday in Wayne Rooney’s MLS senior debut.
The dramatic late turnaround ended United’s run of four games without a win, the last three of which came after the former Manchester United and England star was appointed as DC’s new manager.
Rooney was not allowed to officially lead United (6-12-3, 21 points), where he previously played in 2018 and 2019, until his visa paperwork was finalized earlier this week.
Fountas’ goal, a first-time assist from Kimarni Smith in the fifth minute of stoppage time, was her team-leading 11th of the season.
Durkin, who had once again finished Ola Kamara’s service just three minutes earlier, was the first since his return from Belgian First Division side Saint Truiden.
Rafael Romo made three stops for DC the same week the club traded for another goaltender in David Ochoa.
Junior Urso scored his third goal of the season before the ninth minute for Orlando (8-9-6, 30 points), which lost for just the third time on the road this season.
Pedro Gallese made two stops for Orlando, which has now lost two straight and is winless in its last four but remains fifth in the Eastern Conference.
Alexandre Pato had his fifth assist of the year for the visitors, who lost the season series after losing 5-3 at home earlier this month.
Pedro Gallese produced the best stop in the 61st minute on Funtas, who volleyed one-time on the back foot from close range.
That was as close as DC came to drama of late.
First, Smith found Kamara on the left side of the box, and Kamara sent a low pass into the box where Durkin fired a header into the top left corner.
Not long after the restart, Martín Rodríguez started the next scoring attack with a long ball into the same left corner. This time Smith whipped in a cross on the volley and Fountas curled a fine finish into the bottom right corner to send the home fans into a frenzy.
