Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. pleaded guilty to kissing a waitress without consent at a nightclub in New York in 2018.
The 54-year-old man has been charged with raping three different women at different night spots in Manhattan in 2018 and 2019, but his guilty plea covers only one of the charges.
This comes almost three years after the actor was arrested in a case that has been adjourned several times as his lawyers sought to reduce or drop the charges.
Now Gooding has admitted to a judge that he “kissed the waitress on the lips” without the consent of the LAVO nightclub.
The plea deal does not require imprisonment. He may also withdraw the plea and plead guilty to a minor offense of harassment if he continues to consult for six months.
Gooding was arrested and pleaded not guilty in June 2019, after a 29-year-old woman told police he pressed her breasts without her consent at a rooftop bar and Magic Hour lounge near Times Square.
A few months later, he was charged in two additional cases when more women appeared to accuse him of ill-treatment.
The new allegations allege that he pinched the buttocks of a waitress after making a sexually explicit remark to her at TAO Downtown and forcibly touching a woman who is inappropriate at the LAVO nightclub, both in 2018.
Earlier, Gooding pleaded not guilty to six counts of crime and denied all counts of wrongdoing.
His lawyers say prosecutors have been engulfed in the #MeToo movement and have tried to turn “simple gestures” or misunderstandings into crime.
The judge ruled that if his case went to court, prosecutors could summon two more women to testify about their allegations that the actor also raped them.
Those women, whose allegations did not lead to criminal charges, were among 19 other prosecutors prosecutors wanted to call as witnesses.
Along with the criminal case, Gooding was charged with raping a woman in New York in 2013.
After a judge handed down a default sentence in July because Gooding did not respond to the lawsuit, the actor hired a lawyer and fought the charges.
Gooding won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Jerry Maguire in 1996.
