Cricket legend Phil Tufnell’s first test match jumper shrank in his wife’s laundry

Cricket legend Phil Tufnell remained spun out when his wife washed the jumper in the first test match.

A former Question of Sport panelist, 52, found his precious long-lost sweater in a garden hut.

However, his wife, Dawn Brown, put a high degree of cleaning on the moldy clothes given to spin bowlers when he made his debut in 1990.

A close friend said: “Phil was delighted to find the first jumper he played for England at the bottom of the hut.

“It hasn’t been washed since the day of his play over 20 years ago, so Dawn thought it was a good idea to put it in the machine because it was a bit musty. But sadly it was. Being a high wash, Phil was left with a small jumper that would be difficult for players under the age of 10.

“He’s joking that he should go to a dry cleaner.”

Before retiring in 2002, Toughnell participated in 42 tests in England and won 121 wickets.
