One person was killed and at least 20 were injured after a magnitude 5.8 earthquake on the Greek island of Crete.

People fled to the streets of the city HeraklionThe school was evacuated because the houses and churches were damaged by the earthquake.

Aftershocks were repeated, rattling the country’s fourth-largest city and spreading damage to villages near the epicenter.

A man died when the dome of a small church in the town of Alcalocoli, about 18.5 miles (30 km) south of Heraklion, collapsed during renovation work, police officials said.

According to hospital officials, 20 people were being treated for injuries, and 10 of them were receiving first aid.

Detection dogs, 30 members of the fire department’s disaster response unit, and special rescue equipment were sent to Crete, putting all fire brigades on the island on general alert.

According to the Athens Geodynamics Institute, the quake occurred at 6:17 am, with a magnitude of 5.8 and an epicenter 153 miles (246 km) southeast of Athens, the capital of Greece.

“This is not an event that happened without warning. We have seen months of activity in the area,” seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos told the Greek national broadcaster ERT.

“This was a strong earthquake. It affected densely populated areas on land, not underwater.”

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) and the United States Geological Survey have shown a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 at the epicenter 4 miles (7 km) north of the village of Trapsano.

It is common for different institutions to give different scales early in the aftermath of an earthquake.

At least nine aftershocks also struck the area, and the EMSC gave a preliminary magnitude of 4.6 for the two strongest aftershocks.

International and domestic flights to Heraklion Airport were unaffected by the earthquake.

Meanwhile, the hotel management association in the area states that there was no serious damage to hotels in the area, including many popular holiday resorts.
