Former refugee Cyrille Tchatchet’s Commonwealth medal dream ended in body cramps
After a torturous journey that led him to sleep rough and contemplate suicide, former refugee Cyrille Tchatchet’s dream of winning a commonwealth games medal for England ended with cramps throughout his body.
It had been eight years since Tchatchet competed at the Games, then in the colors of his native Cameroon, before slipping away from Glasgow 2014 with just a pair of shoes and a weightlifting belt to his name.
Thus began Tchatchet’s long journey to British citizenship, with his asylum claim approved in 2016 and his full citizenship only approved earlier this year.
This final leg saw the 27-year-old compete for England in Birmingham – his hometown – but there was no happy ending as cramps struck early in the men’s final of 96 kg.
Tchatchet still managed to snatch 158kg to leave him in silver medal position at the halfway point, but he collapsed after his first clean and jerk attempt and two more failures prevented him from registering a final total.
The 27-year-old was granted full British citizenship earlier this year after a long process
