According to the Wine and Spirits Trade Association (WSTA), members report that imports take five times as long as they did a year ago. According to WSTA, 49 companies, including Moët Hennessy UK and Laurent-Perrier UK, have called on Transport Minister Grant Shapps to take urgent action.
Miles Beale, CEO of WSTA, said:
“There is a significant delay in delivery times for wine and spirits, pushing up costs and limiting the range of products available to UK consumers.”
Wine wholesaler Daniel Lambert Wines says they are right to be very worried.
Owner Lambert told the BBC Radio Wales: “Supermarkets and retailers across the country are planning Christmas back to May.
“Since the beginning of Brexit, we have experienced serious problems with the supply of wine.
“The wines we need to have in the UK aren’t here anymore, so I think we’ve run out of time to bring them to the UK.”
He added: “The supermarket plans to store all Christmas inventory in the warehouse by October.
“This year, this is simply not happening because of the fact that they are doing fire extinguishing activities all year round to actually maintain the demand they have experienced.”
“As the UK’s largest wine specialist, we were able to bring in more than 20% more inventory than last year.
“It contains more than 1.8 million bottles of wine and is currently stored in three additional warehouses, which will be held prior to the important festival period.
“In response to these issues, this year may be a year in which other regions will stand out in the face of shortages in one region.
For example, instead of New Zealand and champagne, we expect record sales of sparkling in South Africa and the United Kingdom.
“By focusing on the additional inventory we bring in and the intuitive sourcing from up-and-coming regions, we are confident that the shelves will fill up, at least for Majestic.
“It may also be a year of discovering a lot of new regions and wines that customers will love.”
